Nurturing our children...

Comment
Zuhair A Tawfiqi

Social media, newspapers and news agencies went viral recently with an incident where a man fired in the air to celebrate the birth of his brother and even went to the extent of putting the barrel of the gun in the infant’s mouth, all because he was beyond elated at the new arrival.

Even if we consider this was a spur of the moment celebration, this action cannot be condoned by any stretch of the imagination.

This man deserves to, and should be, treated as a criminal and be given the maximum possible exemplary punishment.

We have to take such things seriously and not be guided by emotions and other considerations.

How this man acquired a weapon should also be looked into and it should be determined whether it was legal.

We now see weird behaviour more than ever in our societies. This is not like the days gone by when these things almost never happened.

Every day brings out different things that we have not seen before. I wonder what has happened to the people who do not think twice of what the result of their actions could be.

Honestly, I am looking forward to seeing what has happened to this man who fired a weapon to celebrate the arrival of his brother and what action has been taken against him by authorities.

Recently, I also read about an incident where a teacher in one of the Gulf countries attempted to lure one of his students and sexually harass him but was unsuccessful in doing so.

In that case, I was very impressed with the court decision that sentenced him to life in prison.

The ruling was upheld on appeal, when the judge said a teacher, by the nature of his work, must be virtuous and a role model for future generations.

As I mentioned before, it is necessary for us to be strict towards our children at home, our employees at the workplace and our students at schools and universities, etc.

We should not tolerate any mistakes but at the same time, we should be fair.

Discipline, respect, sincerity, good behaviour and ethics are all very important in the education of our children and we must focus on these values and principles so that we can give birth to the best generation that represents our country at all forums.
